Hydrangea Flower Care:
- Measure and Trim: Hold the stems next to your vase to see how much to trim.
- Remove Lower Leaves: Strip any leaves that would sit below the waterline to keep bacteria out of your hydrangeas’ water.
- Prepare the Vase: Fill your vase with fresh water and add the flower food that came with your hydrangeas. If you’re out of flower food, stir in a tablespoon of sugar as a quick substitute.
- Cut the Stems: Trim 1–2 inches off the stems at a 45° angle with a sharp knife or shears while holding them underwater. This boosts water absorption and prevents air bubbles from blocking the stems. Immediately place each stem in the vase—don’t let them sit out dry.
- Find the Perfect Spot: Hydrangeas love water but dislike direct sunlight, heat, and cold drafts. Keep them in a cool room away from direct sun so they can flourish.
- Recondition Regularly: Refresh their water and recut the stems every 1–2 days.
Another Pro-tip:
Hydrangea stems produce a sticky sap that can block water flow. Poke a few small holes down each stem with a needle to help them drink better. Or, dip the freshly cut ends in boiling water for a few minutes to dissolve the sap before placing them back in the vase.
